This 3 days’ camp in Johor Bahru was organised by the Johor Sports Council and conducted by DATUK MISBUN SIDEK ! from Nusa Mahsuri Badminton Academy.
It was a wonderful experience for Jia Min when Datuk Misbun Sidek singled her out from the group and gave her special “training time” and advice on the last day of the camp and told us that Jia Min has great potential in badminton.
At the time when Jia Min attended this camp, she had recently completed the Malaysian National Junior Circuit Grand-Prix Finals where she came in Joint-3rd for singles.
Datuk Misbun told Jia Min, “This year (2009), you are Joint-3rd, next year you will be in the Finals and the year after, when you are 12 years old, you will be the Champion!”
I remember thinking then, “Wow, what a confident statement!”
Well, the “master coach” was almost right …. in 2010, Jia Min almost made it to the Finals (if not for the unfortunate mistake made by the umpire in her Semi-Finals game) and in 2011 (at 12 years old), Jia Min is the Champion !
Should I ask him about her chances at the Youth Olympics? World Junior? All England, perhaps?…….. Hahaha….
